Mike Leake, RHP
Arizona State University (2009 draft)
6-0, 180
Games seen: 1, Innings: 9
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Slight build with strong legs and long arms.
STRENGTHS: Competitive, feel for pitching, FB and CB best pitches. FB 89-92, avg. 90, downhill plane, above-average command, natural sink action and a fearless approach. CB 79-80, avg. 80, above-average command. CH 80-82. Repeats delivery, creates deception with ¾ slot. Repeats delivery, holds runners, good defender, good amateur hitter, a better athlete than many pitchers.
WEAKNESSES: Will not overpower. Delivery sometimes is a little too max effort. Will need to refine command of CH and sinker/slider.
SUMMARY: Advanced feel for pitching will allow him to get most out of FB and CB, room for improvement on CH and SL, chance to become well-rounded MLB pitcher. Will never be the most toosly pitcher and will not be for everyone. Hard to underestimate determination and feel; get the feeling he’ll get the most out of what he has. Reminds me of Ian Kennedy.
