Tyler Matzek, LHP
School: Capistrano Valley (Calif.) HS
HT: 6-3, WT: 220
Games Seen: 1, Innings: 6 (April 2009 start)

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Power frame and thick legs, thighs and full torso; broad shoulders and long legs.

STRENGTHS: Easy motion with power potential to develop three above-average major league pitches. FB 87-90 today; top at 93, heavy downhill plane, two-seam FB with life. CB from 73-76, Slider 87-88 with two-plane movement, show-me CH at 85 to RHH. A competitive streak; hates to lose and shows it.

WEAKNESSES: CB inconsistent today, could have been sharper, CH too hard, has potential, needs work as shown today. Below-average fielder. A little flustered today, body language showed it. Seemed to be aiming today rather than trusting stuff; FB command below-average for him; showed a rigid body instead of a loose frame; needs to develop better flexibility as he advances. Just needs experience and coaching to polish.

SUMMARY: Raw power product with MLB body and above-average fastball. Chance to develop above-average FB, CB and SL from LH side very desirable. Very gifted but very raw, body can be best friend or worst enemy; must monitor and not neglect. A good lump of clay to start with. Would like to see him remain starter, should become innings-eating starting pitcher for a contender.

Overall Future Potential: 55
