Catching up with OF Jake Marisnick, 104th overall, Toronto Blue Jays (2009 Draft)

John Klima | June 30, 2009

Jake MarisnickIn the final days before the 2009 draft, Jake Marisnick worked out for the Angels, Yankees, Royals and Blue Jays. The Angels, Yankees and Blue Jays have a history of drafting athletic outfielders and paying to get them, so those teams seemed like a logical fit. But the Angels took two outfielders with their first two picks, the Yankees took an outfielder with their first pick, and the Royals went heavy on pitching.

Toronto took four pitchers with its first four picks, then used their second third-round pick on their first position player, taking the Riverside Poly center fielder with the 104th overall selection.

Marisnick told Baseball Beginnings that negotiations have started with the Blue Jays, but no agreement has been reached.

Because what the world needs is another report on this guy. Oh well, you won’t see him pitch for a year, so you may as well read about him.

Orioles close to signing Hobgood

John Klima | June 26, 2009

The Baltimore Orioles are expected to announce the signing of right-hander Matt Hobgood Saturday at a press conference at Camden Yards pending the completion of a physical, Baseball Beginnings has confirmed. Hobgood, the club’s first overall pick in the 2009 draft, was the first high school right-hander selected.

Q&A with Chad Thompson, RHP, El Toro HS, 525th overall, New York Yankees (2009 Draft)

John Klima | June 26, 2009

Chad ThompsonChad Thompson began the spring as one of the top high school right-handers on the Southern California watch list, but after a fast start and a pop in his elbow, that changed. The 6-7 Thompson underwent elbow ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery on May 1, but still hoped to have shown enough that he could be drafted and undergo a professional rehabilitation stint.

The Yankees drafted Thompson (17th round, 525th overall) and will take the flyer that Thompson can follow the career path of former Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, who fell out of the first round in his draft, signed for a comparable amount, and began a road which led him to the major leagues.

Thompson’s not the first nor the last young pitcher to get the name of the former left-hander who was once known for 287 major league victories instead of a surgery that prolonged his career and now bears his name. Thompson knows his career isn’t over, but still, the setback was a disappointment. Baseball Beginnings caught up with him in May and talked about where he is and where he hopes to be.

Introducing Big League Beginnings and David Wright

John Klima | June 25, 2009

One of the new features we have planned for Baseball Beginnings is called Big League Beginnings. Here, we’ll catch up with current major league players to discuss their memories of their earlier years as draft prospects and minor leaguers.

The big leagues are a pretty tough place, to be perfectly honest. It’s a dog-eat-dog workplace where most guys know that if they aren’t good all the time, they won’t be there. Confidence is a must and so is experience. Players are guarded, but many of them keep those early years close to them.

Speaking of players, here’s one: Mets third baseman David Wright. Click here to see him as a high school player a decade ago at the Area Code games. You can also find this new feature any time across the top menu bar.

Scouting the Cal-Carolina League All-Star Pitchers

John Klima | June 24, 2009

A funny thing happened Tuesday night: I went to an A-ball game and actually saw some guys who might pitch in the big leagues one day.

When one of these games goes 10 innings and features 25 strikeouts, it’s safe to say that either the wind was blowing in or the pitchers were throwing somewhat controlled smoke — or perhaps a combination of both.

Baseball Beginnings scouted the California-Carolina League All-Star game Tuesday night at Lake Elsinore. We were in the house at 2 p.m., we believe before any pro scouts were in the joint. We collected several interviews, most notably with Giants prospect Buster Posey, Royals prospect Mike Moustakas and Braves prospect Cody Johnson.

We’ll get to those stories in the coming days, but before they kick me out of the press box and make me hop the barbed-wire fence, I have to report what mattered most Tuesday night, the pitching. Read the story after the jump, and I hope that wearing shorts today wasn’t a bad idea. (Ah, the joys of online digital journalism as opposed to print. Personality plays!)

Scouting Video: Angelo Gumbs, SS-CF, Torrance HS (2009 Draft)

John Klima | June 23, 2009

Top this: video taken from the top step of the dugout at Angel Stadium. This is what happens when a center fielder takes a full-throttled infield at shortstop. I’m not going to say a thing. I’m just going to sit back and watch, because when a guy can play, you don’t need to say what you can see.

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Angelo Gumbs: Best Athlete in 2010 Draft?

John Klima | June 22, 2009

Angelo Gumbs 2009Talk about getting a head start. Three days before the 2009 MLB Draft, Baseball Beginnings rose early to go watch shortstop Angelo Gumbs of Torrance High School play in a championship game at Angel Stadium.

Few things beat this for scouting: a morning game, a big league park, a junior prospect and video taken on the top step of the dugout.

Gumbs is a high school shortstop and a center fielder at heart, the position he’d like to play as a pro. He added about three inches from his sophomore year to his junior year and started to fill out, though there is a long way to go in that body. He’s rangy and whippy with above-average athletic actions. He’s going to be a player, and we’re happy to introduce him.

UCLA LHPs Rasmussen (6 IP, 10K) and Grace (92 mph FB) open eyes on Cape

John Klima | June 19, 2009

UCLA left-hander Rob Rasmussen, a 2010 draft prospect whose first half of the 2009 college season found him buried on the depth chart, pitched six innings Thursday night for Orleans, recording 10 strikeouts, one walk, one hit, and one unearned run. Rasmussen’s best weapon is a hard curveball that, when working right, profiles as his major league out pitch. Across the diamond for Cotuit in the same game, left-hander Matt Grace pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, hitting 92 mph. He walked two and struck out four. Grace is also a 2010 draft prospect, who has gradually added power during his college career.
