Scouting Report: Austin Wilson, OF, Harvard-Westlake (2010 Draft)
By The Baseball Beginnings Guy
November 4, 2009
Austin Wilson, OF
(Harvard-Westlake HS, Los Angeles, Calif.)
DOB: 2/7/1992
2010 MLB Draft age: 18
6-3, 190, B/T: R/R
Report Made: November 1, 2009
Games Seen: 6 (Aflac, Area Codes), Innings: 30
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tall and powerfully built, narrow waist and sloping shoulders, long and limber arms and legs. Really put together yet retains athletic actions.
STRENGTHS: Plus, plus right-handed power. Large and strong hands, forearms and fingers, can “roll a poll” with a wood bat, great wrists, hard contact when locked in, premium power ability for amateur prospect. Balanced and rhythmic at the plate; an average (4.3) runner with plus throwing arm capable of staying in RF upon signing.
WEAKNESSES: Has improved as an amateur player over past few years; better idea of keeping hands back, better approaches at the plate, but skills that will need to be continually refined upon signing. Probably going to have to take some strikeouts as he improves as a hitter. Plate discipline will need to continue improving. Enough speed not to be a clogger but I wouldn’t expect stolen bases. Arm accuracy can improve with work. Baserunning adequate at this stage.
SUMMARY: Two premium tools – RH power and arm – and three ML average complementary tools. Very desirable prospect; should be first division middle-of-the-order bat and corner OF at ML level.
GRADES (Present/Future)
Hit: 30/60
Power 40/80
Run: 50/50
Arm: 70/70
Field: 50/50
Overall Future Potential (OFP): 62

Great site! I was doing a “mock draft” post for a blog I started w/ a friend of mine, and this site does an incredible job discussing players. Keep up the good work!
