Scouting Report: Stetson Allie, RHP, St. Edward (OH) HS (2010 Draft)
By The Baseball Beginnings Guy
December 2, 2009
Stetson Allie’s fastball and change-up are the separating factors for him and should make him a first-round pick in the 2010 MLB draft. The Ohio high school right-hander will take two plus pitches into pro ball.
Stetson Allie
6-4, 225, RHP
St. Edward HS (Olmsted Falls, OH)
Games Seen: 2, Innings: 4
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tall, broad shoulders, barrel-chested, long limbs and fingers. Solid lower half, large feet, has some physical projection remaining.
STRENGTHS: Heavy rotation four-seem fastball 94-97. Two-seem FB, 89-92, sink, run on RHH. Change-up 79-81, does not vary off ¾ slot, plus command on both pitches. Easy delivery and smooth mechanics; balls comes out of hand very well. Positive arm speed and arm action, not a max-effort guy, gets extension and downhill plane, lands well, good athletically for a big guy. Did not fall out of mechanics and stayed closed and tight on delivery, stuff maintained through short look.
WEAKNESSES: Third weapon SL, 81-84, average command, occasional late bite down in zone. Not a pro-ready third pitch at this time. Big body type, should be fine with conditioning.
SUMMARY: Fastball velocity, fastball command and change-up depth and command in strike zone are separators. Reminds me of Jonathan Papelbon, brings same aggressiveness with him, willing to pitch inside, comes off like a competitor. With a third pitch he is a very good No. 1 or No. 2 starter, with two pitches he is a top closer. Good future ahead.
