Scouting Video: Angelo Gumbs, OF, Torrance (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

December 10, 2009

Angelo Gumbs is one of the more intriguing 2010 Draft prospects. Around Southern California, everyone knows the Torrance High School prospect has some projection. We’ll ponder that question after another look at Gumbs swinging the bat.

Gumbs is an above-average athlete with slightly above-average speed. Physically, he will have some projection remaining because he will get stronger. Defensively, Gumbs is the best center fielder in Southern California in the 2010 draft, and that part isn’t close. His arm is also an above-average tool. The question is if Gumbs can find an approach that allows him to consistently unlock his offensive potential. To put it another way, he has great hands, but has to continue to learn to hold them back.

This is not a deal breaker yet, but it is something scouts are going to watch him for. It’s something Gumbs will have to be aware of as a professional. The minor leagues are full of great athletes with great hands who simply don’t trust them. To avoid underachieving, this is the main adjustment he’s going to have to make upon signing. He’ll have to show that he can be an aggressive hitter while keeping his hands back. It’s going to be a burden for him this spring because he’s going to be playing in a very slow high school baseball league.

All in all, Gumbs is a very good prospect. He’s been compared to Aaron Hicks, but Hicks’s power and arm strength is a notch above. Looking several years down the road, if Gumbs can stay in center field and find consistent offense, it will be his best opportunity to become a productive major league player. If he winds up as a corner outfielder, it may prove more difficult for him to separate himself.
