Manny Machado will get plenty of looks in 2010, including this one.
I’ve seen Machado compared to Jiovanni Mier, but those comparisons don’t resonate with me. The reason is because I believe Machado’s body and physicality are different from Mier, whose lithe athletic actions are responsible for his offense as well as his defense.
For me, Machado is a player who will profile as a major league third baseman rather than a shortstop. Machado’s prime tool will be his power potential. Machado has a very aggressive cut with a strong finish and a wood swing that is tailored to generating lift.
Listed at 6-2, 180, Machado will probably develop more of a Cal Ripken Jr.-type of body as he physically matures. As time has taught us, players with that frame sometimes stay at short, but more often end up at third where their offense will determine their future.
