Pro-side Scouting Report: Connor Graham, RHP, Cleveland Indians
By John Klima
January 9, 2010
The immediate comparison for Indians right-hander Connor Graham is White Sox closer Bobby Jenks. Graham is a big body with a big arm, a power closer two-pitch type with a fastball, split, and an average curveball. In the brief look I had, Graham struck me as a potential closer who needs to watch his body, improve his fastball command in the strike zone, and keep his composure. Big league hitters tend to smell blood against frustrated young pitchers who throw their gloves against the side of the dugout wall.
CONNOR GRAHAM, RHP
6-7, 235
Games Seen: 1, Innings: 2
2010 Opening Day Age: 24
PHYSICAL DESCIPTION: Tall, thickly built, barrel chest, broad hips and thighs.
STRENGTHS: Heavy rotation four-seam FB, 93-95, avg. 94. Split FB 94-95, secondary weapon, late action low in strike zone, ML out pitch.
WEAKNESSES: Below-average FB command, needs to be able to get to counts where he can more effectively use his split. Doesn’t hide ball and create deception, hooks wrist and arm action should confine long-term status to bullpen, is a concern for me. CB 84-87, hard, but lacks shape and depth.
SUMMARY: Bobby Jenks-type physically imposing two-pitch power closer with aggressive mound persona. Stuff can be his best friend; self can be worst enemy.
GRADES (Present/Future):
Fastball 65/70
Split 50/60
Curveball 45/50
Command 40/45
Control 40/45
Overall Future Potential: 54
