Pro-side Scouting Report: Yonder Alonso, 1B, Cincinnati Reds
By John Klima
January 10, 2010
Reds fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of first baseman Yonder Alonso, who stopped in the Arizona Fall League on the way to supplying some much needed punch in Cincinnati. The former Miami first baseman, who was a college masher, doesn’t strike me as a pure power bat. Rather, I felt Alonso will become a professional hitter with gap power and about 20-home run potential.
YONDER ALONSO
6-2, 215
B/T: L/R
Games Seen: 2, Innings: 15
(Cincinnati Reds)
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Stocky frame, low center of gravity, big hips and thighs.
STRENGTHS: Easy left-handed stroke, gap-to-gap approach, should make consistent contact. Very smooth defensively around the bag, better footwork than he probably gets credit for.
WEAKNESSES: Too many inside-out swings for corner player, did not produce torque I wanted from corner infielder. Below average runner, below-average arm strength, below-average athletic actions.
SUMMARY: Should have competitive HR power, gap-to-gap, should be consistent average hitter. Needs to watch body, defense should play at first. Should be consistent every day offensive major league first baseman with enough power production and defense for position.
GRADES (Present/Future):
Hit 55/75
Power 50/65
Run 30/30
Field 45/60
Arm 40/40
Overall Future Potential: 54
