Scouting Report: A.J. Vanegas, RHP, Redwood Christian (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By
January 14, 2010

A.J. Vanegas is one of the best power arms in Northern California. He has a college commitment to Stanford, where I’m already wondering if he will have a career path similar to 2009 first round pick Drew Storen.

Consider, Storen was a power-arm high school right-hander who found his way into the bullpen at Stanford and became a first-round pick. Vanegas (Redwood Christian HS) also has an aggressive mound persona and the power arm to match.

Vanegas, however, has a more durable frame than the slender Storen. Here’s the scouting report, now I’ll sit back and see what happens.

A.J. Vanegas
RHP
6-3, 200
Redwood Christian HS
Games Seen 3: Innings, 3

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tall, broad shoulders, long limbs, strong legs and lower half. Durable and powerful workhorse frame.

STRENGTHS: FB 89-94, top 95, pitches at 91-94. SL 79-81, best secondary pitch.

WEAKNESSES: DNS (Did not see) CB or CH in my looks.

SUMMARY: Big, strong and raw right-hander with plus fastball velocity and movement. Slider should continue improving and become power secondary pitch. Loved mound tenacity and aggressiveness, could see him as a closer.

GRADES (Present/Future):
Fastball      55/70
Slider          40/55
Command 30/50
Control      30/50

Overall Future Potential: 56
