Scouting Report: Ryan LaMarre, OF, Michigan (2010 Draft)

University of Michigan outfielder Ryan LaMarre might not wind up on many national college lists for the 2010 draft, but I think this guy might have a little bit more upside than he may get credit for.
One, LaMarre isn’t a speed burner, but he’s a good athlete. A former hockey player with a strong lower half, he can start and stop on the bases. He’s not going to be Vince Coleman, but he won’t be a clogger. Two, LaMarre has more in his bat. His hands work for me and he generates bat speed. He hits off a firm front side and gets a good sound off a wood bat. He didn’t throw very well when I saw him and he doesn’t have a ton of power right now.
But I’ve seen guys like this who show you offensive promise with wood as college players, work hard to prove themselves in the minor leagues and find their way to the big leagues.
Baseball players with hockey work ethics are hard to find, an intangible that doesn’t come up often. This clearly wasn’t a huge showcase guy as a high school player and he’s not going to be a college baseball media darling type.
But LeMarre’s got a chance to be professional hitter, pure and simple, and his athleticism, work ethic and instincts might give him just enough to finally land on some of those lists in leagues where it really pays.
RYAN LaMARRE, OF
