Dylan Covey was pitching in a long-forgotten game somewhere in Florida a few years ago when he found himself in trouble. He couldn’t throw his fastball for a strike to save his life. In previous seasons, he never really felt confident in any one off-speed pitch, but this game forced him to find something he needed. What happened was he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a million-dollar curveball. Four years later, the hard hammer is Covey’s signature pitch and the separating factor that puts him in Group 1 of 2010 high school draft right-handers. Baseball Beginnings caught up with Covey for this recent Q&A.

In my earlier scouting report on DeAndre Smelter, I identified his “money pitch” as a “power-sinker type” that was hard and I thought had room for more power in the future. Come to learn that it’s a splitter. I love this guy and he’s a first-rounder all the way for me. Smelter is a way above-average athlete, a multi-sport guy whose balance and coordination should keep him healthy for years to come. He’s got the overall assortment of power stuff that should make him a workhorse guy in the future.

Jake Hernandez figured out early that his calling in the game was calling pitches. He committed himself to becoming a standout defender at a position where few players have the patience to grow and develop. He can also throw, where his address should be 1.9 street. Offensively, he’s best when he goes to right field. Baseball Beginnings caught up to Hernandez for this recent Q&A. His college commitment is to USC, and we’ll see who gets him first in 2010.

The drawing cards with Robbie Aviles are his live, loose arm, the physical projection, and the two-seam fastball movement. Some of these traits can be seen in this scouting video.

Articulate, Intelligent, Ambitious, Educated and Talented. Talk about a five-tool guy.
In a strong man’s game populated with one-dimensional sluggers, Austin Wilson is too smart to fall into the trap of being what baseball expects him to be. He could sit back and try to pole everything and not worry about the strikeouts or the batting average, but that wouldn’t be an efficient use of his talent. Baseball Beginnings caught up with Wilson for this Q&A, touching on topics ranging from what kind of player he really believes he is going to be, to how he is going to achieve that goal.

Tony Wolters has four tools going for him. The hands from the left-side allow for solid contact and a strong compact stroke with wood. He’ll run you a 50 at the very least. Defensively, he’s got a chance to stay because of something that is seen on this scouting video.
