Scouting Report: Matt Lipka, SS-2B, McKinney (TX) HS (2010 Draft)
By John Klima
March 29, 2010
Matt Lipka is one of the top middle infield prospects in Texas for the 2010 draft, whose speed and hands should combine to make him a very solid pro prospect in the coming years. This guy is one of the best athletes in the 2010 Draft.
Matt Lipka, SS-2B
6-1, 192
Bats: R, Throws: R
McKinney HS, Frisco, TX
Games Seen: 6, Innings: 30 (Summer 2009)
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Broad shoulders, filling chest, strong hips, thighs and torso. Medium center of gravity, strong hands and forearms.
STRENGTHS: Balanced hitter, trusts hands, sprays with authority, uses all fields. Above-average runner, good first step. Above-average athleticism. A burner: 3.9 from the right side. Might be best right-handed HS runner in 2010 draft. Became better at using the entire field in 2009. Should have at least Major League average arm. Should be average ML defender at worst, could grade up because of athleticsm. Didn’t get tons of SS reps this spring.
WEAKNESSES: Sometimes pulls off and uses more arms than hands. Could develop average pro power in the coming years but we’ll have to wait. Didn’t see arm from SS as much this year because he pitched. Doesn’t have a tool that sticks out as significantly below-average.
SUMMARY: Multi-tool middle infielder with above-average hands, speed, and athleticism. Should be offensively-oriented shortstop or second baseman. Hard nosed player; showed he cared in on-field demeanor. Great athlete. All-State HS football WR in Texas. Level-headed. Ready for the grind. Not just a good athlete — I believe he’ll hit.
GRADES (Present/Future):
Hit 20/60
Power 20/50
Run 80/80
Arm 50/50
Field 40/50
Overall Future Potential: 58
