April 14, 2010
Any time you get a high school team with two obvious prospects, all you have to do is sit quietly and let scouts think you’re not listening to their speculation about who is going to be the better pro. When it comes to such matters, it’s best to ignore opinions and look at what the player gives you. In other words, the tools don’t lie. You have to know what to do with them, but at this stage, give me the raw ability. Here’s the other half of Fullerton’s draft duo, Dominic Ficociello.
Dominic Ficociello, INF
6-3, 170
Bats: S, Throws: R
Fullerton HS, Fullerton, CA
Games Seen: 4, Innings: 20
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTON: Tall and lanky, high hips, loose limbs, just starting to fill in, much physical projection. Still growing into body; reflected in athletic actions defensively.
STRENGTHS: Switch-hitter with plus arm and raw LHH power to RF. Contact-oriented from RH side. Balanced and controlled hitter, good hands and loose wrists.
WEAKNESSES: Below-average runner. Growing into his own body, often reflected in rigid athletic actions defensively, needs to bend knees on ground balls, develop softer hands, should improve with time. Occasionally strays from offensive foundation, especially RHH, tends to fly open. Still learning to use the whole field consistently from both sides.
SUMMARY: Should develop into offensive-oriented switch-hitting third baseman with plus arm.
GRADES (Present/Future):
Hit 20/65
Power 35/65
Run 40/40
Arm 70/70
Field 30/50
Overall Future Potential (OFP): 58
