Cody Buckel threw a no-hitter earlier this season, helping himself. Maybe he’ll get to Pepperdine. Maybe he won’t.
Cody Buckel, RHP
Royal HS, CA
Games seen: 4, Innings: 16
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Modest frame, height, yet high hips and larger feet; should have some physical projection left.
STRENGTHS: Loose and easy arm action, generates torque from hips and leaning back, copies Lincecum. FB 89-93, has hit 94, averages 92 early innings, 89 later, occasionally will have cutter action on inner half. CB works as secondary weapon, 72-75, has some shape, modest power. Cutter 87-89. FB command and control should be above-average in coming years. Stays closed through wind-up, max-effort type of delivery but it might work for him in coming years. Strong core, very balanced, consistent stride and landing.
WEAKNESSES: Gets under the ball too many times; needs to gain better extension and create maximum downhill plane on all pitches. Needs to stay away from over-throwing and opening up; robs him of natural sink movement. Concern that CB won’t have enough power to be premium out pitch in pro levels.
SUMMARY: Good raw arm power despite body type; feel raising slot would help him in coming years. Reminds me more of Hershiser than of Lincecum at this point, slow and methodical mound persona reminds me of Haren.
Overall Future Potential: 52
