Scouting Video: Marcus Littlewood, INF, Pineview (Utah) HS (2010 Draft)
By John Klima
April 27, 2010
Marcus Littlewood is considered the top position player from Utah in the 2010 Draft. I have heard comments that he may be too big to stay at shortstop. My first thought was, have you ever seen Tulowitzki? My second thought was, did you notice Ripken used to be pretty tall? It won’t be the body size, it will be what he does with his athletic actions, and what position he plays isn’t the question. (For the record, I was fine with him at shortstop in the week I watched him in Summer 2009). The question, for me, is not if he will hit, it will be does he have enough power for third base if he winds up there. Have a look at the video and we’ll continue this discussion.
This video is from the summer and I’m looking forward to seeing this guy again. I think he has a chance to be a very solid pro. I don’t know how much power he will have, but I think there will be something. This is one of those guys whose bat will be his tool, everything else (arm, speed, range) will be just enough, and his baseball know-how will help him to compensate where he needs to. The deep dirty secret of baseball is that minor league instructors and big league managers love that kind of stuff, and those guys always get a look, as long as they hit.
There was some physical projection here. The guy knew how to throw the head of the bat, which means hands and wrists. I’ll stop at that until I see him again. From what I saw, he’s one of those guys who should make for a very solid pro. He probably won’t pop your eyes out, but I’m telling you, guys who play the game right with comparitively modest pro tools always hang around forever.
