Scouting Report: Peter Tago, RHP, Dana Hills (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

May 7, 2010

You know that line in the scouting report when you write games seen and innings pitched? I’d need a calculator and a road map to figure out how much I’ve seen Peter Tago. I’ve seen three high school games in 2010, plus several looks in Fall Ball, Aflac and Area Codes – probably about eight games and probably a good 30 innings. So I feel pretty comfortable in making this call.

Peter Tago, RHP
6-4, 205
Dana Hills HS
Games Seen 8, Innings: 30

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tall, lean, athletic body type. Loose and whippy frame. Long legs, high hips, broad waist and shoulders. Long fingers and large hands. Elastic arm and more room for muscle on frame.  Chest will fill out.

STRENGTHS: Smooth and explosive arm power. FB 92-94 (93), bumps to 95-97. Above average velocity and movement and average command. 2-seam fastball has electric late life low in the strike zone, can also climb the ladder with hard 4-seamer for out pitch. CB consistently 73-75 (75), with power, quickness and shape. CB has above-average velocity and movement, sometimes above-average command. Has put-away CH but did not use in HS games. Has true SL but did not use in HS games. Mostly FB, CB in HS. Throws from MTQ slot, generates power from loose arm and hip torque. Good overall baseball athlete: 1.5 release times from stretch.  Fields position, very good stamina and durability; have seen him maintain 90-92 deep in games when he has struggled and maintain 92-94 into sixthand seventh inning of good days.

WEAKNESSES: Occasionally opens up and loses front side, occasionally drops slot but shows ability to correct in game. Will have to smooth out inconsistent fastball command patches.  Holds runners OK in HS, can do better at next level, slide step coming along.

SUMMARY: Power, stuff, depth, athleticism, projectability, consistency and a very strong competitive streak. Shows ability to execute a big pitch in a big situation deep in a game. Has a warrior’s approach. Team-first guy. A great competitor with great stuff, very high ceiling. Good luck on the pro side.
