Scouting Report: Peter O’Brien, C, Bethune-Cookman (2011 Draft)
By The Baseball Beginnings Guy
April 12, 2011
I had a look at Pete O’Brien this spring. We’re talking about a big, physical right-handed hitting catcher where we see the power and arm combination behind the plate, a good tool combo that probably gets him into the first round.
Pete O’Brien, C
Bethune-Cookman
6-5, 225
Bats: R, Throws: R
Games Seen 1, Innings 9
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Big burly physical guy with broad shoulders, chest, hips and thighs.
ABILITIES: Physically imposing RHH with aggressive long swing, ok bat speed, armsy with extension, uppercut, lift and two-hand finish. Doesn’t get cheated. Gets his hacks. Power and contact geared pull. Adequate receiver, hands and footwork with sure arm strength, action and accuracy enough to catch every day. Enough of an athlete to stay behind the plate to start out.
WEAKNESSES: Long sweeping swing needs to show he can’t be beaten up-and-in, probably going to be a streaky type hitter with above-average power production for position. Won’t run.
SUMMARY: Potential everyday ML catcher with enough bat to be middle of the order. Durable big body behind the plate, old school workhorse type with power and arm strength.
GRADES: H 4/5, P 4/6, A 6/6, F 4/5, R 3/3. Adjusted OFP range 54-55
