Scouting Report: Billy Flamion, Central Catholic (CA) HS (2011 Draft)

By
May 22, 2011

I saw Billy Flamion for about a week in the summer and then for a brief look early in the spring. I don’t think there’s a lot of guesswork with this guy. Somebody will take a run at him early to see what becomes of the raw left-handed power in his bat. He’s not going to be a toolsy guy outside the arm, which I can go with a 5 on. Won’t run, won’t cover a lot of ground in the outfield, probably won’t hit for a Wade Boggs-like average. So he’s a power corner with an average arm if he pans out. I’ll adjust the OFP on him for the bat, mainly because I know some teams will. Me? He got too stiff when I saw him again, so I wouldn’t be on board. Hope the kid shoves it up my bat rack, but I’d rather be honest than make up a bunch of crap.

Billy Flamion, OF
Central Catholic HS, Modesto, CA
6-1, 192

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Burly, thickly built, slow-looking body.

ABILITIES: Plus raw left-handed power and average arm strength. Starts hands well and shows long sweeping uppercut geared pull. Not a lot of guess work, likes to get arms extended and turn and burn, ability to drop the barrel on an inside pitch. Arm would be enough for right field.

WEAKNESSES: Can’t run and won’t cover a lot of ground defensively. Wouldn’t look for him to be a high-average hitter.

SUMMARY: Physically mature high school senior with plus left-handed power profiles as 1B, LF or RF corner bat type. Not a toolsy guy; he’ll hit for power or fall off the vine. Billy Butler if he hits for enough average, Jack Cust if he doesn’t.

OFP Range – 45-50 ADJ: 50-55
