Left-hander Chris Sale’s frame is long, loose and lean and offers the potential that there is more power to come in his arm. That is one reason why I like Sale, because I think he has more projection that you typically find in college starting pitchers considered for the first round. Most times, guys who are proclaimed “polished,” are anything but. In this case, Sale is more like a fresh and loose arm who is going to be adding polish to power as a pro. That is a very desirable combination from a scouting perspective.

Jesus Valdez has the makings of a sinker-slider type with a 90-92 fastball and a loose body. Note the final two pitches of the video where he intentionally dropped his slot for a different look. Right there, I said to myself, Jeff Weaver.

The first time I saw Southern California High School shortstop Derek Campbell, he was a junior, more than a year before his draft season. This guy was the definition of lean and lanky. A.J. Venegas is one of the high school right-handed starting pitching prospects I like the most in a strong year for pitching. His college commitment is to Stanford, where he would be an automatic weekend guy. But I also think his arm power, arm speed, body type, coordination and physical projection will make him a better candidate to sign after high school and continue development against wood bats.
