Q&A with Tyler Skaggs, LHP, 2009 Draft

John Klima | April 1, 2009

Tyler Skaggs has the misfortune of being a left-handed high school starting pitcher in Southern California in the same year that another high school left-handed starter, Tyler Matzek, is on more top-end wish lists than just about any pitcher north of Stephen Strasburg. But that doesn’t mean that Skaggs isn’t in demand. Instead, his tantalizing combination of a left-handed starter who could one day throw three quality major league pitches is more than enough to earn him his own attention. (more…)

Strasburg video on the way

John Klima | March 26, 2009

He’s the flavor of the month, the talk of the town, everybody’s Mr. 1/1. We’ve got a video package of San Diego State right-hander Stephen Strasburg we’re putting together here, but we hope you’ll give us some patience and keep checking back within the next 24 hours. We’re new to putting video on our site, but we think we got it solved. (Actually, Jen thinks she has it solved, and I just take all the credit.)

Video coverage is a big part of the plan here once we get it rolling. We’re also going to be sprucing up the logo a little bit, but we wanted to get content up. Basically, if I don’t write and see players, my head will explode.  Hey, witty blog-style banter is part of the scouting life. (On a side note, if anybody can name all the players on the scroll above, you are an “80″ as a baseball rat and our kind of reader.)

Also on the way are some of the site’s first pro-style scouting reports, with a few college players, Oregon State catcher Ryan Ortiz and Oklahoma State left-hander Andrew Oliver, coming up. These, too, are a big part of the plans here and we expect them to be regular content features.

As a side note, for those of you who want to get a look at Santa Monica HS left-hander Tyler Skaggs, sources say his next start is Tuesday afternoon at Hawthorne High School.

Also on the scouting trail, this is a good weekend to see two probable No. 1 pick college pitchers in Arizona State starter Mike Leake and Arizona closer Jason Stoffel. Don’t forget ASU outfielder Jason Kipnis, who was a fourth-round pick out of high school but went to ASU instead.

Q&A with RHP Matt Hobgood (Norco High)

Matt Hobgood, RHP, 6-4, 250, Sr. Norco High (2009 draft class)

Matt Hobgood’s junior season put him on the prospect map. He won a ton of newspaper awards and was named California’s Junior of the Year by CalHiSports, joining a list with a big league linage. Hobgood joined fast-tracker Mike Moustakas and current major leaguers Delmon Young, James Shields, Gerald Laird, Jon Garland, Eric Chavez, Randy Wolf, Dmitri Young and the exiled Barry Bonds.

Hobgood, a 6-4, 250-pound right-hander, vowed not to live off one season alone. He trimmed 15 pounds off his frame and gave his body a look more like Giants right-hander Matt Cain and less like Yankees right-hander Joba Chamberlain. After shutting out Riverside Poly and holding outfielder Jake Marisnick hitless Tuesday, Baseball Beginnings caught up with Norco’s horse for a Q-A. (more…)
