Area Codes Game 19: Everything’s Faster in Texas

Give me power arms on a slow day and you’ll make me a happy lad.
Area Codes Game 18: Paging Passenger Chris McCue, your sinker is working

I overheard someone say a team “ran itself out of that inning.” Yes, it’s Tuesday, get-away day, when bat speed looks like traffic through Culver City at 5 PM (a little local color for our readers around the country) and running yourself out of an inning is OK as long as you have your batting gloves in one hand and your boarding pass in the other.

Sometime in this game, left-handed hitting outfielder Billy Flamion smoked a ball high and deep down the left field line. The ball got out of here in a split second. The ball was ruled foul.

I love it when the bat speed I see beforehand comes into play within a game.

Not much to report in this get-away game for the Washington team.
Area Codes Game 14: Monday Morning Pepper

Outfielder Charles Tilson was the player people came back to see. In his first at-bat he was hit by a pitch and then out on a double play. The infielder who turned that double play, Drew Stankiewicz, is growing on me. I’ve watched the infields and more importantly – the pre-game pepper – and the guy has soft, fast, and instinctive hands. These little things play huge in games but get lost in the radar gun, long-ball world. Playability matters when you’re playing games where scores count and getting paid to do so. To shore up the case, he had another hit, what I term solid slap, to left. It works just fine for the player he is. The guy plays the infield as smooth as anyone you will find.
Area Codes Game 13: You wait for the ham to sizzle in the frying pan

When you get to the Sunday night game of the Area Codes, the thing has the energy of a football game in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter in a blowout. Seeing as how Texas was in, I’m sure they’ll appreciate humor. That said, if you aren’t watching players, you aren’t working, and if you aren’t digging, you aren’t trying.

Here we are in California, and it is an Illinois guy who came in here and was the first guy to take tools and put them into play all in one game.

A human tendon – that’s the phrase going in my report.
