Andy Oliver is actually a left-handed starting pitcher, not just the subject of a million Google News alerts about the messy lawsuit with the NCAA that involves the collegiate eligibility of amateurs having agents or lawyers advising them before they sign professional contracts.
On this note, I give you two gifts. First, footage of Oliver pitching in Palm Springs this season. I should have more content on Oliver in the coming days. He’s going to sign as a starter, but there could be some bullpen interest in him if he’s going to be fast tracked. We’ll see what happens.

Second, the notion of amateur players having agents goes back further than the Power Lords of baseball or the NCAA would have you believe. I give you the story of left-handed pitcher Paul Pettit, who in 1950, became the first $100,000 bonus baby in baseball history. This story was published in the 2007 edition of the Best American Sportswriting and can be read here. Yes, Pettit had an agent as an amateur, and yes, he got hammered for it.
