LSU likes its right-handers to be tall, lean, hard-throwing guys with Friday night stuff. Pro scouts like the same thing, but they call it No. 1 starter stuff. In the 2010 MLB Draft class, Colorado right-hander Kevin Gausman fits both criteria. If he gets to LSU, he should be an immediate contributor. If he signs after high school, he’ll become one of his new organization’s power arms for the future. Let the gamesmanship begin. Here’s what the scouting report says.

Ty Linton is an intriguing player who might be the best two-sport Division I prospect in the 2010 MLB Draft. The Charlotte Christian HS prospect’s combination of power potential and athleticism make him a player to watch.

Scott Frazier, a right-handed pitcher from Upland, committed to Pepperdine University during the early-signing period. It would seem to be a good fit for Frazier and for Pepperdine, which hasn’t been afraid to go old school in the past and use guys with the arm/bat combo on the bump and in the box.
Two examples spring to mind, most famously Dan Haren, and more recently, A’s minor leaguer Steve Kleen.
Here’s a look at Frazier on the mound and then we’ll break him down.

Drew Vettleson has committed to play college baseball for Oregon State, where I’m sure he’s heard plenty of Jacoby Ellsbury comparisons.
I had another former Pac-10 player in mind when I scouted him. As the top junior in Washington in 2009 and a two-way player who moonlighted in basketball, my future impressions of Vettleson are purely as an offensive player. We’ll have video of him in the future. In the meantime, here’s what the scouting report says.

Angelo Gumbs is one of the more intriguing 2010 Draft prospects. Around Southern California, everyone knows the Torrance High School prospect has some projection. We’ll ponder that question after another look at Gumbs swinging the bat.

Catcher Stefan Sabol committed to play college baseball at Oregon. I put a Craig Biggio projection on him because I believe he’ll have the hands to consistently put the ball in play as a pro. I see enough power in the coming years to make him a threat to occassionally get one out. He’ll run very well for the position, which lends to the Biggio comparison. Defensively, he improved from summer to spring but still needs pro instruction and innings to be ready to catch at the major league level. He shows enthusiasm for the position in-game, which is a good sign. He’ll need to improve on catching low pitches in the coming years and learn to better transfer some of his athletic actions to blocking balls. His arm strength is more than enough to make him a threat, but he’ll need to work on his footwork so his throws don’t sail on him as much. Be this as it may, if he hits, they will find a place for him to play.

Kris Bryant has two valuable commodities going for him, both of which you cannot teach. One in his body type, which is long, tall and loose, and the other is his power. His power is all raw and his frequency is all in front of him. He’s going to be a good riser on the 2010 Draft charts and he is yet another product from Las Vegas, which sends us power-hitting corner infielders the way the Dominican Republic sends us shortstops.

Dominic Ficociello is long, loose and lanky, an athlete who physically projects. A switch-hitter whose at-bats at the Area Code games helped the Fullerton High product find a path to play SEC college baseball at Arkansas, Ficociello is a natural hitter from the left side with the ability to drive a ball the other way and offers the promise of power to all fields. Have a look at him swinging the bat.
