I probably liked ASU shortstop Drew Maggi a little bit better than the 15th round, where the Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the 2010 draft. I’ve had two looks at Maggi, one last summer with wood and one this spring with metal. I’m not saying I had him in the first round, but I certainly saw a guy who had enough tools to make a run at the big leagues in the coming years, and not just an organizational filler, so long as he made some adjustments and gained some strength. Here’s a look, and then we’ll break him down a bit.

ASU center fielder Johnny Ruettiger has that Jacoby Ellsbury body type – long, lean, tall and loose. He has a nice and easy left-handed swing, though he’ll probably need to shorten it a touch in the future. He’s a gazelle-like runner, better underway, needs to improve the first step. It hurts his run times to first a little bit. The watch might tell you he’s at least average, but underway, he’s slightly above-average. This first step quickness translates to centerfield, where he’s also better underway. He reminds me a little bit of Jarrett Parker from Virginia in the 2010 Draft. It’s a little too early to make a definitive call on what kind of pro he will be, but you can see the building blocks of a center fielder with speed, defense and contact.

Kole Calhoun might have been a lumberjack in a previous life. In this incarnation, the dude is a max-effort left-handed swinger who has a little bit of Babe Ruth in him.

Kole Calhoun is one of those guys who will just pick up the bat and hit wherever he goes. As described in our earlier scouting update, Calhoun won’t light you up with tools. He’s going to be an American League type of player and he’ll have to rake to make his mark. I wouldn’t expect his pro path to be any different than his amateur path. He probably won’t be a star, but he’ll probably find a way to hit his way into steady work. Which level will that work come out? Depends how much he hits.

Seth Blair is going to be drafted as an innings-eating right-handed workhorse. I think he has a good arm and a sense of how to be a pitcher. He primarily pitched with his fastball in this look. By the time I filmed from the third base side, he was almost finished and not getting the same downhill plane he was earlier in the game. (more…)

I think Seth Blair should be a very solid pro – very solid foundation, durable body, fastball life and command. Some development needed for third and fourth pitch as a pro starter. See no reason why he shouldn’t get there.

I’m sure Kole Calhoun has heard his entire life that he lacks the tools to make it. When the stocky left-handed hitting 2009 College World Series star crossed paths with one of my scouting cards recently, I had to agree. But you have to be careful with a guy like this. Left-handed power, the ability to pull the ball, and the persona of a devil-may-care survivor might just be enough to help him find himself in the right place at the right time a few years down the line.

Arizona State right-hander Seth Blair’s time with Mike Leake almost certainly rubbed off on him. In a recent Friday night look at UCLA, Blair proved how he is trying to become a starter who isn’t afraid to trust any pitch at any time in the count as a potential out-pitch, especially in a big situation.
