Chris Sale is no secret anymore, but it wasn’t that long ago when only a few people were aware of the tall left-hander from Lakeland, Fl., who might occasionally pop 90 on the radar gun but otherwise had pedestrian velocity. Over time, Sale became a more mature pitcher and person. He helped himself in the Cape Cod League last summer, where Baseball Beginnings caught up to him for this Q&A. To his credit, Sale hasn’t lost the momentum he established last summer. For Florida Gulf Coast, Sale started the 2010 season 5-0 with a 1.41 ERA. He had 67 strikeouts and 44 hits allowed in 51 innings pitched.

Left-hander Chris Sale’s frame is long, loose and lean and offers the potential that there is more power to come in his arm. That is one reason why I like Sale, because I think he has more projection that you typically find in college starting pitchers considered for the first round. Most times, guys who are proclaimed “polished,” are anything but. In this case, Sale is more like a fresh and loose arm who is going to be adding polish to power as a pro. That is a very desirable combination from a scouting perspective.

The Baseball Beginnings pre-draft 2010 college list isn’t made up of Boras Babies and Baseball America Beauties. Instead, we go by the players we have seen in person on the Cape or out West here in California. This list is being published in September 2009, eight full months before the June 2010 MLB Draft. As we stated in our high school lists for pitchers, infielders, outfielders and catchers, our college lists are not meant to be taken as definitive this early in the process. Don’t live or die by anything this early, as some guys will sink and some will swim. If you want hype, well, I’m not your kind of scout. As we say here at Baseball Beginnings, the players will rank themselves.
