Baseball Beginnings is pleased to unveil our first NATIONAL look at the June 2010 draft here in September, 2009, eight months before the first name is called.

In the scouting world, every quality player is on a follow list. It’s a good bet that most of these players are already on such lists, but it’s important to remember that things will change over the next eight months – no list, no matter this one or one by a team should be considered definitive at this time of year, but should instead be regarded as a road map.

Some players who are not on this list will be hot and others who were hot in summer and fall will lose some luster in spring. That’s why you won’t see rankings here, because Baseball Beginnings works like a major league team. We’re not ranking players right now. And when we do, we keep them in-house. The world is full of people who will rank players. A good scout NEVER tells.

Every single player on this list has been seen by our scouting staff IN PERSON, meaning we don’t take our information from secondary sources. It’s on us.

Ty Linton is hitting his way into prominence. Linton hit two more balls hard Saturday evening in Game 13 of the Area Code Games at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

Playing for the Athletics (Southeast) Linton (Charlotte Christian HS, Matthews SC) hit three balls hard, including one extremely hard. He pulled a pitch from Eric Stevens deep into the left field corner. The ball hit just to the right of the 348 marker, only a few feet away from clearing the fence, with an audible thud. It was his second triple of the game. He drove a ball well to deep left field in his first at-bat and got enough of it to hit it off the wall. In his final at-bat, he hit a single to right-center and stole second. Linton is a better runner when underway than he is at the start, at least from this look, but clearly his bat is what will carry him. He’s one of the strongest players here.

D’Monte Grissom (Whitewater HS, Fayettville, GA) again showed that he can influence a game with his speed and aggressive nature. Grissom’s body type is reminiscent of Kirby Puckett’s, and like Puckett, Grissom is a put together and pure athlete. The “football body” tags don’t belong on this guy, because he’s strong, but he’s not stiff. Grissom is more supple in his athletic nature than anything else. He drew a walk, stole second, took third on a low pitch catcher Greg Brodzinski (Bishop Eustice, Turnersville, NJ) dropped, and walked home on a single.

Pitching for the Yankees (Northeast), right-hander Eric Stevens (Don Bosco Prep, Pompton Lakes, NJ) helped himself in this game with a power frame and the hints of power stuff. He’s listed at 6-5, 215 and generates good torque and arm speed. His fastball hit 90 and 91 in his first inning and he worked at 89-91. His curveball for strikes came at 73-75 with a slider at 76. He has a Jason Schmidt-type frame and allowed Linton’s near-miss home run.

A’s starter Jordan Smith (Providence Grove HS, Liberty, NC) pitched at 87-89 and should be a good college get for a pitching staff.
