I’ve run across Ryon Healy, formerly of Crespi High, a few times on the trail: Area Codes, Fall Ball, high school, and now summer ball with wood again. He did not get drafted, and really, most teams don’t want to spend money for Division I college players that aren’t 10 minutes away from the big leagues. In Healy’s case, he one’s of an absolute ton of guys Oregon is getting from Southern California. And whenever I see him, I’m pretty much convinced that one of these years I’m going to see legit right-handed power. I can see the signs. For me, I don’t care if it’s not 10 minutes away. I know power production potential when I see it.

Ryon Healy is known as a two-way high school player, but his offense is what will one day get him drafted. We caught this BP video of Healy playing for the Brewers scout team at USC, where parking is eight bucks and traffic is horrible. Thankfully there were some good prospects here, such as Healy, Christian Yelich, Rouric Bridgewater, Angelo Gumbs and Tony Wolters. Austin Wilson wasn’t in the day I was. To the video: (more…)

Continuing our sneak peak at the 2010 MLB Draft here in September, eight months before the draft, here is the first look at infielders. We’ve divided up the prospects by first basemen, third basemen and middle infielders. As we said in our 2010 High School Pitchers Draft Prospect List, always take follow-lists with a grain of salt simply because of the nature of baseball. Some will rise, some will fall, and some will come out of nowhere, guys who should be here, that we haven’t seen or heard of yet.

Catcher Greg Brodzinski took a fastball from A.J. Vanegas off his hand, but stayed in the game. In his second at-bat, Brodzinski showed some of the muscle he showed in BP on Wednesday when he made firm contact on a line drive base hit to left field. Brodzinski took second base and Sean Coyle, a speedy if sleight 5-9 right-handed hitting second baseman, went from first to third.
Brodzinski never got a chance to get a good swing against Vanegas (Redwood Christian HS, Alameda, Calif.), a hard-throwing right-hander who worked from 89-94 with his fastball and threw a 79-81 slider. Vanegas, who has a durable frame (6-3, 200), did a nice job staying in his mechanics and producing power and will be a draft quality talent out of high school.
