Updated Pro-Side Report, Buster Posey, C, Giants

By John Klima
January 7, 2010

I had my second look of 2009 at Giants catcher Buster Posey in the Arizona Fall League. I first picked up Posey at the California-Carolina League All-Star game in July and picked him up again at the Fall League’s All-Star game in October.

I believe the reason Posey was still in the Fall League through the end of the season was not for the at-bats, but because he needs to catch. And I don’t think he becomes the everyday catcher until he proves that he can be a reliable everyday defender. A converted college infielder as everyone knows, Posey is pretty much the only guy who can block Posey.

Q&A with Giants Scouting Director Doug Mapson

By John Klima
August 31, 2009

Jason StoffelDoug Mapson describes the draft as filling out a major league team five years from now. He should know. The self-made baseball man whose longtime influences, the late scouts and former players, Gene Handley and Spider Jorgensen, still guide his insights, is now in his 29th year in professional baseball.

Baseball Beginnings caught up with Mapson to talk about San Francisco’s first five picks of the 2009 draft. The Giants felt good about the haul; they feel better getting all five players signed.

Q&A with Giants prospect Buster Posey

By John Klima
July 13, 2009

(San Jose Giants)

(San Jose Giants)

Buster Posey was given a quiet little corner with the other catchers in Spring Training. He had space for his gear and room to watch. The fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft and the Golden Spikes Award winner in his first full pro year out of Florida State, Posey entered a new stage of his career. For once, he was doing the looking.

After signing just in time to get his feet wet at the end of the rookie ball season, Posey got a trip to play winter ball in Hawaii and began this season at San Jose, on the fast track to San Francisco. He made it to the California-Carolina League All-Star game in July at Lake Elsinore, which was a shock in itself.

It doesn’t take very long to identify what Posey does well. At 22, Poesy is lean and lanky. A former infielder converted to catching, Posey stays in his own swing as well as any young hitter I’ve ever scouted. He should develop into a doubles machine and have 20 home run power in his best years. Defensively, Posey pops throws to second base consistently in the 1.8-1.9 range. He has the soft hands of a former infielder and the required footwork. He has yet to physically mature, though his power will always come from his loose and whippy body.

Baseball Beginnings caught Posey before the All-Star game and talked about his progress and life on the fast track. (more…)

Scouting the Cal-Carolina League All-Star Pitchers

By John Klima
June 24, 2009

A funny thing happened Tuesday night: I went to an A-ball game and actually saw some guys who might pitch in the big leagues one day.

When one of these games goes 10 innings and features 25 strikeouts, it’s safe to say that either the wind was blowing in or the pitchers were throwing somewhat controlled smoke — or perhaps a combination of both.

Baseball Beginnings scouted the California-Carolina League All-Star game Tuesday night at Lake Elsinore. We were in the house at 2 p.m., we believe before any pro scouts were in the joint. We collected several interviews, most notably with Giants prospect Buster Posey, Royals prospect Mike Moustakas and Braves prospect Cody Johnson.

We’ll get to those stories in the coming days, but before they kick me out of the press box and make me hop the barbed-wire fence, I have to report what mattered most Tuesday night, the pitching. Read the story after the jump, and I hope that wearing shorts today wasn’t a bad idea. (Ah, the joys of online digital journalism as opposed to print. Personality plays!)
