Scouting Report: Scott Frazier, RHP, Upland (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By John Klima
June 7, 2010

Scott Frazier found the velocity bump from the 90-91 range in the summer and the fall to 90-93 this spring. Paired with his 6-4 height and the makings of a frame some teams think has more power yet in store and you can understand why someone will take a flyer on him.

The scouts who like Scott Frazier will say that he is all upside. The scouts who have questions will ask if he has the arm speed or stamina to become a top guy. To be honest, I’m not sure which way he’ll go. This is the kind of guy who could really get better on the mound in the next three years with corrections and conditioning. He could also be what he is. I don’t know. I’m going to sit back and let the kid tell us what he’s going to be. I have a feeling he’s going to get a lot of chance to tell us.

Scouting Update: Scott Frazier, RHP, Upland (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

May 10, 2010

I’ve said before that Scott Frazier represents the kind of pitcher you take a flyer on because you like his size, think there’s more in the arm, and then let minor league pitching coaches train him. It’s a right-handed do-it-yourself kit.

Scouting update: Scott Frazier, RHP, Upland (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

Scott Frazier is the classic right-handed build-it-yourself potential major league right-hander. In this recent look, he was coming off an outing in which he threw the ball very well. He came back on short rest and pitched with a sore groin in the rain, so this wasn’t Frazier at his best and is a look that has to be taken with a grain of salt. You do have to give the guy credit for strapping it on and trying to make it work.

Covey cruises, leads 2010 Draft pitching prospects at MLSB Showcase

By John Klima
February 14, 2010

Dylan Covey continued to show the quantity and quality of stuff that separates him from a strong national crop of high school right-handed starting pitchers, but he wasn’t the only starting pitcher who helped himself Saturday at the Major League Scouting Bureau Southern California Invitational Showcase at the Urban Youth Academy. Scott Frazier, a right-handed pitcher from Upland, committed to Pepperdine University during the early-signing period. It would seem to be a good fit for Frazier and for Pepperdine, which hasn’t been afraid to go old school in the past and use guys with the arm/bat combo on the bump and in the box.

Two examples spring to mind, most famously Dan Haren, and more recently, A’s minor leaguer Steve Kleen.

Here’s a look at Frazier on the mound and then we’ll break him down.

Angels Elite player summaries (Part 1)

By John Klima
November 25, 2009

Today begins our two-part series on player summaries from the 2009 Angels Elite Fall Season. These are not player rankings and we have not listed the players in any preference or order. This follows the professional scouting model, where at this time of the year, the scout is in follow mode and letting the players dictate which players are on the rise entering the spring.

These summaries have been compiled from personal scouting done this fall. In each case, the players have been seen multiple times.

Be sure to come back Thanksgiving Thursday for the completion of the list.

First look: 2010 Draft Prospects (High School pitchers)

By John Klima
September 22, 2009

Baseball Beginnings is pleased to unveil our first NATIONAL look at the June 2010 draft here in September, 2009, eight months before the first name is called.

In the scouting world, every quality player is on a follow list. It’s a good bet that most of these players are already on such lists, but it’s important to remember that things will change over the next eight months – no list, no matter this one or one by a team should be considered definitive at this time of year, but should instead be regarded as a road map.

Some players who are not on this list will be hot and others who were hot in summer and fall will lose some luster in spring. That’s why you won’t see rankings here, because Baseball Beginnings works like a major league team. We’re not ranking players right now. And when we do, we keep them in-house. The world is full of people who will rank players. A good scout NEVER tells.

Every single player on this list has been seen by our scouting staff IN PERSON, meaning we don’t take our information from secondary sources. It’s on us.

Covey shines at Angels Elite InterSqaud

By John Klima
September 21, 2009

Right-hander Dylan Covey pitched so impressively in his first outing for Angel Elite last Wednesday that one scout quipped, “He broke all our guns.”

Covey was outstanding. He only threw a bullpen at the Area Codes and pitched well at Aflac, but he was better here, specifically because his good curveball was great. (more…)

Right-hander Scott Frazier will be draft quality out of Upland HS. Listed at 6-6 and 205, he entered the game throwing hard, hitting 90 or 91 in his first five pitches. He is tall and rangy with a fast arm, durable build and good balance and coordination.
